St. Augustine Eregi Teachers’ Training College was founded in 1949 by the Catholic Mill Hill Fathers to train T4 (P4) teachers. Subsequently, it was handed over to the Catholic Diocese of Kisumu and later to Kakamega Diocese.In 1955, the College started training T3 (P3) and T2 (P2) teachers.In 1960, the first group of T1 (P1) teacher-trainees, was admitted.In 1967 Eregi Teachers’ Training College became full Government managed institution upon absorbing Mukumu, Kibabii and St. Joseph’s Kitale Teachers’ Training Colleges.
The College is situated seven kilometers to the west of Chavakali Trading Centre (Vihiga County,) off the main Kisumu – Kakamega road on Chavakali – Bushiangala road. It lies in Shisejeri Sub-location, Eregi Location, Ikolomani Constituency of Kakamega South Sub-County in Kakamega County. At inception, the College stood on a three-acre piece of land. Through gradual expansion, it now occupies a 52-acre space.
The College is sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega which is the Spiritual See of His Lordship The Rt. Message From Dean of curriculum
Eregi teachers training college is one of the oldest in the country. The college has distinguished itself as one of the best college in the country. Its motto is 100% discipline, diligence and dedication has helped in shaping our teachers trainees in this institution. The college has consistently produced very competent and disciplined teachers. Most of the Eregi graduates have pursued higher and competitive careers even after completing Eregi. Eregi has very committed teaching staff. Most of the lectures have a long teaching experience. Presently we have a teaching staff of 64 members, 20 female and 44 male. The college registered 496 candidates for primary teaching education examination, who sat for their exams this year in august, 2011. The dean of curriculums office coordinates all the academic programmes in the college. The dean of curriculum works closely with head of departments and head of subjects. Presently we have the following departments: maths, integrated science, language, creative arts social science and education. The dean’s office also coordinates the teaching practice in the college. Under the deans of curriculums office is also the exams office which is very essential in the administration of both internal and external exams. Eregi teachers training collage was ranked 1st nationally in primary teachers education exam for the year 2010 with a mean grade of 4.764. The collage faces few challenges in curriculum implementation. The senior principal is working hard to address this problem I would like to thank all teaching and non-teaching staff and student for the support they have given unto me science I was appointed the dean of curriculum. Together we can make Eregi a better place for us, Everyone has big part to bring this great institution to great heights.
